The Greenhouse Project was started in order to build a not-for-profit year-round organic greenhouse in Mid-Michigan.  It will supply a fully sustainable, affordable, healthy, local food source.  It will have a focus on the low-income, elderly, and disabled but be available to the entire community.  The greenhouse will be a geo-dome style greenhouse efficient enough to run during a Michigan winter.  Ground breaking will take place in 2016.  Once fully functional, the greenhouse will be fully self-sufficient, net-zero, teaching greenhouse, farm, and orchard supplying an organic, affordable, local food supply to improve the health and lives of all in the community.

Answer:

You figure out what you love and you share it with those around you in a way that makes their world a better place to live in, in every way possible.  Sound hard?  It can be as simple as starting a spring seed exchange at work and encourage friends who have never had a garden to try out a few plants.  Take your favorite variety of tomato and pass it on anyone who is willing to try it out.  Accepting what others offer you in exchange and trying their favorite varieties in your own garden, is just a small step in the road.  Sharing the rewards from the successes and sharing the knowledge of the mistakes, encourages a community to form that reaches out to others and is happy to bring a little sunshine into everyone's lives.  The idea to expand outside of the workplace began to form.  That's where The Greenhouse Project began.

Now What?

Now you do whatever you can to make the idea come to life.  You push through the set backs.  You overcome the obstacles.  You rely on your friends and family to help keep you pointed in the right direction.  Start asking questions.  Start figuring out which questions really matter.  Find the answers to your questions and start bringing together a glimpse of what you want the final outcome to look like.  Take the questions that you were asking and begin connecting them to what the final image will look like.  Then you push yourself to make the dream a reality.

Growing up on a small farm with a large garden, I was never a huge fan of the garden.  My mother spent hours planting and weeding all summer long.  I only helped if I had to.  Come time to harvest, I was all to happy to dive in head first at that point.  However, I always had a dream of running my own farm someday.  As I got older, I began to have less and less to do with the garden and less of a desire to deal with it.

When I became a single parent, everything changed.  I had a college career that I put on hold to support my daughter.  Working long hours in entry level jobs, left me wanting a better life for myself and my daughter.  I went back to school while working full-time.  In two years, I graduated with a bachelors' degree in retail management.

The idea to own my own business began to form in my mind and the dream of my own farm began to resurface, just not in the way I expected.  As my daughter got older, I began to remember the garden I grew up with and I wanted her to have that experience the same way I did.  My mother was still doing her garden every year so I started getting involved and bringing my daughter with me.

My daughter's love of growing plants and giving back at the same time brought me so much joy that I began to share it with others.  I found that others loved to learn how to grow things as much as she does and things just kept going from there.

Who We Are

3rd Board of Director

We are currently looking for a third member for the board of directors.  We are looking for someone with a strong background in business and finance.  A large knowledge of plants is not necessary but would be a plus.  This is a voluntary position at this time so it will require someone willing to give their time for the betterment of their community.  A love of sharing and helping others is a must.  If you are interested in being considered for this position, please email us a cover letter and resume.
